Spanish

¡Hola!

St. Pius X School is proud to offer Spanish classes from 3rd grade to 8th grade as well as a Spanish Club for students in preschool through 2nd grade. The Spanish program is interactive and hands-on. Students learn through role plays, skits, crafts, puppet shows, song, dance, games, and traditional quizzes and tests. By engaging students' creativity and encouraging them to learn by doing, they are able to maintain conversations, learn challenging verb tenses, enhance their vocabulary, and learn about Latino culture. They are also able to pray in Spanish as we start every class with a prayer. Our annual bilingual Mass is an opportunity for them to learn more about the story of Our Lady of Guadalupe and honor our Blessed Mother in a special way. Our 8th graders have the opportunity to feel confident as they participate in all the parts of the Mass in Spanish. All students learn to recite the Our Father and Hail Mary in Spanish and we say these prayers at this Mass. We celebrate other traditional Latino holidays including the Day of the Dead.

Students are graded on participation, quiz and test scores, projects, and fluency activities such as skits and puppet shows. Classes are once per week for Spanish Club and third through fifth grade, three times per week for sixth and seventh grade, and twice per week for the eighth grade.  We offer an Advanced Spanish Program that allows eighth graders the opportunity to test out of Spanish I in high school. Each year, over 75% of the students place into Honors Spanish or Spanish II. Eighth graders can also choose to become Spanish Club Helpers where they practice their Spanish while helping teach the younger students.
