Welcome to Kindergarten!


A curriculum guided program following Diocesan Guidelines for Early Childhood Education and Illinois State Learning Standards.

The Kindergarten Program at St. Pius X allows students to attend the half-day (morning only) or the full-day program Monday through Friday. Kindergarten class size will be determined based on enrollment for the current school year, with optimal class size for the half-day program and the full-day program as 25 students. 

Kindergarten students are included in the school's 1:1 Technology Initiative, with each student being provided a school-issued iPad. The Kindergarten Academic Program includes studies in Religion, Reading/Language Arts, Math Readiness Programs, Science, Social Studies, Music, Art, Physical Education and Technology.  Please see below for the Kindergarten Curriculum:

  • READING AND LANGUAGE ARTS

  • READING /LITERATURE

    The children will experience literature through read aloud books, Big Books, and On My Way practice readers provided by this series. They will also experience authentic literature in the form of poetry, folktales, non-fiction, fiction and fantasies. Reading fluency will develop and improve as students are presented with the following skills: 

    • phonemic awareness 

    • phonics/decoding 

    • high frequency words 

    • comprehending the main idea 

    • concept of print 

    • sequence of events 

    • inference/making predictions 

    • compare/contrast 

    • drawing conclusions 

  • WRITING AND LANGUAGE

    The components of this section are oral language, writing, listening and speaking. Skills will include: 

    • vocabulary expansion 

    • using exact naming words 

    • using exact describing words

    • using singular and plural naming words 

    • using action words 

    • shared writing

    • interactive writing 

    • independent writing 

    We will use these skills to write class stories, class books, and write in journals.

  • MATH

    Kindergarten students use the text, Math Advantage, published by Harcourt Brace. Instruction includes hands-on activities to develop concepts. The students will be introduced to the following areas of study:

    • sorting and classifying patterns and movement 

    • matching and counting money 

    • measuring time 

    • identify and order numbers 0-100 

    • count to 100 by ones, twos, fives and tens 

    • introduction to addition and subtraction 

  • SOCIAL STUDIES

    Kindergarten students will use literature to study: 

    • families 

    • community 

    • holidays 

  • SCIENCE

    Students use concrete, hands-on experiences to understand science in the physical and natural world around them. They learn through observing, predicting, questioning and explaining. Students will study: 

    • seasons 

    • weather

    • magnets 

    • light, color, shadows 

    • plants 

    • water
